About the Department

Medical Laboratory Science as a profession is designed with basic roles in the community, such as conducting problem-solving research and providing community services, and in the healthcare system, such as providing evidence-based quality healthcare service, achieving efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and achieving good health planning and management.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science is the youngest department of the College of Health Sciences at Mattu University, established in 2014 E.C/ 2021 G.C. The department has sub-disciplines of Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, Hematology and Immunohematology, Immunology and Serology, Body fluid analysis, Clinical chemistry, Molecular biology, and others working together to achieve a common goal.

Despite being juvenile among the departments of the College of Health Sciences at Mattu University, the MLS department consistently performing various irreplaceable duties in creating suitable environments for teaching learning, and installing and equipping the laboratory rooms for students’ practical sessions. The department of MLS has three separate laboratory rooms designed for Medical Microbiology Laboratory, Medical Parasitology Laboratory, and Hematology Laboratory.

Currently, the department has one PhD, one Assistant Professor, seven Lecturers, and three Laboratory Technicians, with a total of 12 staff. There are 161 students altogether admitted to the department of MLS and attending Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science in two different programs; Generic regular program and Post-basic regular program. 

Students of Bachelor of Science degree are expected to take 49 modules with a total of 301 ECTS of which 21 modules are core, 20 are general and 8 are supportive modules. 

In the near future, there is a plan of expanding the study in launching a post-graduate program in one of the specialties belonging to the department.

HoD's Message

It is with immense pleasure that we note the department of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) offers a promising and convenient program whose curriculum is constantly updated to meet the needs of MLS professionals in a situation where there is an expansion of health facilities in the country. 

The MLS department owns resilient and dedicated staff to support our students academically and produce competent and highly skilled professionals who can apply evidence-based practice to conduct a problem solving studies, provide a community services and undergo diagnostic activities. 

We are proud of the students who join the department every year, highly trusting the department and staff to satisfy their thirst for profession-related sciences. Hence, the MLS department will never disappoint the students regarding the inputs for their qualification, and we believe that our students will be well accepted in their job profiles and will consistently exceed the expectations of the corporate world.

The department of Medical Laboratory Science has a vision to be ranked as most prominent interdisciplinary education and research center in laboratory medicine in East Africa by the year 2030.

Mission

The mission of Medical Laboratory Science department is to train MLS students equipped with the basic knowledge of laboratory medicine, capable to serve the community and improve human health.
